New Piedmont Adult School Class Aims to Cultivate Lasting Friendships

 In

A new class at Piedmont Adult School, The Friendship Lab, is designed for adults seeking to build stronger, more meaningful connections in their lives. The class will run Mondays, Oct. 21 through Nov. 18, from 7:00-8:30 pm.

The Friendship Lab offers a unique approach to friendships by blending research-based techniques with hands-on experimentation. Instructor Tony Shen, an experienced educator and mindfulness practitioner, created the course to help adults cultivate deeper, more supportive relationships. “The single most important factor for a healthier and happier life is good relationships,” Shen says. “More than ever, we need better and more quality friendships.”

Shen, who holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Stanford University and an MBA from UC Berkeley Haas School of Business, transitioned from a successful career in EdTech to focus on his passion for improving lives through social connection.

Participants in The Friendship Lab will participate in weekly activities that include self-reflection, improv-based exercises, and group discussions. Students will be encouraged to have fun and play, fostering the vulnerability and openness necessary to build lasting bonds. At the end of the four-week journey, participants will be equipped with practical tools to create and sustain fulfilling friendships.

“Friendship is often deprioritized in our society, even though we know it is fundamental to our happiness,” Shen says. “It takes effort, intention, and planning. My hope is that this class will help people realize they are more likable than they think, and that vulnerability—though difficult—is the key to building true friendships.”
